How To Ensure Your Pets Have a Safe Halloween

 Hello!

In this months blog I thought I’d share some tips/ what I do to keep my pets safe on Halloween.

I  grew up having cats  and dogs my entire life. These are the things that I was taught and things I figured out on my own. I hope this helps to keep your fur babies safe. Halloween can be a dangerous time for cats so my biggest tip is to:

Isolate cats (put them in a low to no traffic room with the door shut) make sure to have water, food, litter , toys, beds, maybe a cat tree and some light on.  I also like to treat them with some soft food and/ or some extra treats or cat nip. You can also put on a show, movie or the radio. I like to put on something that’s Halloween themed but not creepy. You don’t want to scare them, and you don’t want them to feel trapped or alone. (Halloweentown 1, 2 & 3 work great.) another great recommendation is to have something that smells like you in that room to help calm them. If you have an easily stressed cat, investing in a Feliway diffuser might be beneficial.

The best thing to do is isolate them for the whole day so they don’t sneak out (especially if they are used to going outside or are outdoor cats). Once the trick or treaters stop and you are for sure done opening and closing the door, you can let them out.  You can also dress them up but make sure you’re with them when they’re dressed up. If you leave, take off their costume. Make sure their collars with their licenses are on them at all times.

Dress your dog up take him/ her trick or treating with you and the kids. Don’t leave your animals outside during Halloween. Make sure your dogs collar is on with its license. If you’re dog is too nervous to accompany you trick or treating, make sure you take it for a long walk before hand giving it plenty of time to use the washroom. (Be aware to prevent any interactions w trick or treaters). Leave a bowl of candy on the step with the classic sign only take 1 so no one knocks or rings the door bell. Put on a movie or show. Make sure it’s not scary or creepy or too loud. Make sure pup has a lot of water and somewhere where they feel safe. I also love my wyze cam for any time I have to leave Rex at home or if I want to check on the cats.

Make sure to keep chips, chocolate and candy out of the animals reach.

See you in the next blog!
